E48 Died

Post by raymonddfz »

Hi,
I have an E48 which was working perfectly for the rolling road session last week, went to start it up today and appears to be dead. The lap top told me that there was no ECU present. I have a spare unit, plugged it in and the engine fired into life. So Can only assume the E48 has gone and died on me.

Before I throw it away, anybody got any thoughts?

Regards

Happened to us, bought another proven working unit only for same thing to happen a few months later. Sent both units back for assessment but components needed to repair them were no longer available. I guess they've gotten to an age where they're getting fragile.

Even the newest of these are well over 10 years old now. Most components are obsolete.
I think I have some injector drivers, some 5v regulators, and maybe some coils.

Is it worth posting it back to DTA for a look?

you could probably open it up yourself at this stage. Take a photo of the board and see if anything looks burnt etc

I have repaired loads of E48,s in the past and if it is not coil or injector driver you are knackered if a leg on the 5 volt reg is burnt out forget it as a track in the board will be blown, as Alex says they are all very old now.

Also if you have accidentally put 12v onto the case this will cause the 5v reg to burn out and finish the ecu off...but most users don't admit to doing that.

Thanks for all the replys, I haven't had a chance to pull it apart yet but I may do, just for curiosity.
An upgrade to an s40 or s60?

The S60 is a good step up from an S40, it would definitely be my choice of the two.

S40 is the equivalent, but, as Steve says, the S60 is a good step up.
