I was hoping to run an S40 with 4 coils setup with wasted spark, and semi-sequential injection, making use of the standard Toyota triggering, which from what I can make out uses a 24/1 toothed wheel and two VR sensors, enclosed in the distributor.

I found this info, it's in relation to megasquirt, but might be useful here?

I have a funny feeling the S40 is not going to do what I want, and I'll have to go S60 instead.

Thanks

I ran an E48 (2 coil drivers) with 4 x COP's, I think the coils were just in parallel, worked fine.

Thanks Rob, I'm certain the S40 will drive the coils, but I'm not sure whether or not the trigger wheel which is housed in the standard distributor is compatible with the S40.

I'd like to avoid having to go to an external wheel on the crank pulley if at all possible.

The 24/1 set up is effectively a 12 tooth crank trigger with no gaps.
The /1 refers to the single pulse every cam rotation, and 24 to the 24 teeth every cam rotation, which is 12 teeth every crank rotation.

The S40 cannot use this set up as it doesn't have a cam input for the single pulse. As there are no missing teeth on the 24 tooth signal, this cannot be used as a crank signal on it's own.

Running COP on an S40 is not advised. It has been done, but there is no heatsink on the coil drivers, like there was on the E48 and is on the S60/80/100.

Ideally you'd run an S60 on this engine.

Thanks Alex, that confirms my fears.

S60 it is.
