BMW S54B32 injector flow rate?

Post by VR6Turbo »

Does anyone have any definitive info on what size injectors the above engine used?

There's a few BMW guys on here, so I though one of you might know 8-)

There's a very useful chart here: http://users.erols.com/srweiss/tableifc.htm

Not sure about the S54B32 but he S50B32 uses 0280 150 792 which is rated at 245cc/min presumably at 3 bar (although it doesn't say) I think it runs at a higher pressure in the B32, I cant remember exactly what though but I think it's nearer 4.2 bar.

Presumably they ran a higher pressure to get more flow out of those injectors. Out of interest the S50B30 uses 701's which are 226cc/min @ 3 bar which is only slightly more than the 744's used in Astra VX XE engines (214cc/min)

I chose some different modern injectors for my S50B30 rally engine, I'll post the number when I find it!

I just did a search and I think the S54B32 uses 5 bar fuel pressure and 0280 156 026 which are rated at 302cc/min @ 3 bar

I may be useful for you. 8-)

The stock part is Bosch 0280156052, and O-ring to O-ring is 46.5mm. These are rated at 193g/min@3bar (264.4cc/min) straight cone. The size is atypical, so if you want to adapt the more common size injector to the engine, you'll have to do some modifications. I'm not sure if this is a different injector in the U.S. vs the rest of the world.

270 cc/min at 3 bar = 339 cc/min at 5 bar, the factory S54 pressure.

I contacted RC Engineering and spoke with Wayne who found a couple of injectors that are dimensionally the same and would work in the S54 fitment.

From the '99-'04 BMW R1100S and R1150GS, injector 0280155788 is 320 cc @ 3 bar. Run it at 49 psi for 339.6 cc/min. From the ‘00-’04 VW 1.8 turbo, injector 0280156061 is 300 cc. Run it at 56 psi for 340.4 cc/min.

By the way, I did that research to locate an injector that I can use for an E85 tune. With the R1100S injector, I'd have to run at 83 psi (about 5.75 bar) to deliver 30% more fuel than stock, a likely value to allow E85.

The ones I bought are 0280 155 868 rated at 363cc/min @ 3bar, these should be adequate for my 3litre S50B30 engine which will hopefully push out 300bhp.

I've since noticed that many tuners, including Cosworth Engineering in their Duratecs use 0280 155 968 (these are green) which are rated at 310cc.min @ 3 bar

So if I use those numbers as a baseline, this is really close to what I need :D

The reason for my query is I noticed a nice looking S54B32 base map in the sample maps supplied with DTASwin.

I then started comparing the S54 to my VW R32 engine and noticed some similarities. Now that I know the BMW's injector size, I can complete the picture 8-)

VW: 3.2 litre V6 - 84mm bore, 95.9mm Stroke - Compression: 11.8:1 - 4 valve head - 324cc Bosch EV12 @ 4 bar - Intake cam advance: up to 52 degrees - Exhaust cam advance: up to 22 degrees - single 3" throttle - switchable intake tract length - 280 flywheel hp (non US) @ 6800rpm.

BMW: 3.2 litre inline 6 - 87mm bore, 91mm stroke - Compression: 11.5:1 - 4 valve head - 339cc Bosch EV6 @ 5 bar - Intake cam advance: up to 40 degrees - Exhaust cam advance: up to 25 degrees - 6 x individual throttles - short runner intake - 343 flywheel hp (non-US) @ 7900rpm.

So the DTA base map (standard engine) should be fairly close I think, which I can tweak to suit.

My aim is 100hp/litre with the stock long runner intake. I doubt I will be able to exceed that as it's not as close to over-square as the S54 is and it also lacks individual TBs and a short runner, but I'd be happy with 320 horses in a 1200kg car :D

Thanks again guys. I've got something to try over the weekend now!
