P8 pro with failed coil driver, REPAIRABLE?

Post by a7djc8 »

Hi i have been offered a p8 pro thats been running on a audi 5cyl and it had a cyl 3 coil driver fail, he had it repaired then month later cyl 1 failed and he gave up and bought a s80

First how much does a coil driver repair cost

And 2 did it fail because he was running rover cop ignition coils from v6 with no resistors as see it lists 2.2k resistors in manual and nothing in s80 manual and that's why it has been fine for him now

As i want to run it on a audi 5cyl too with tfsi coils

Many thanks David

I've done 2 but you do need a big iron to do it as its a surface mounted device, although my failures were injector drivers.
Alex should be able to offer the service?

Alex is the man at DTA, probably best phoning him.
As you have 8 coil drivers and its probably running wasted spark? without cam sensor the spare coil drivers may work for you as I suspect on a 5 cylinder, driver 6 replicates driver 1 etc? 7/2 an d 8/3
Just an idea

I did phone dta yesterday morning and spoke to a girl who took the details but i am yet to hear back of price and if they will do it

unless i need to ring again and ask for him

In the manual it says this

"Special Considerations for Audi 5 Cylinder
The engine must have 5 coils and a 60 - 2 crank wheel at 60 degrees.
Set to 10 cylinders in general engine settings. Set unequal firing and
1 coil per plug OFF in unequal firing angles. Set sequential injection
OFF in injector phasing. You do not need a cam sensor.
Wire coils as below
Cyl 15234
O/P 12345

Wire Injectors as below

Cyl 15234
O/P 12566"

if that helps

You said cylinder 3 was faulty, that will be output 4, as the P8 only has 8 outputs I suspect it would be duplicated on OP 9 but it doesn't have it so my idea won't work.

The Autosport show is on at Birmingham from Thursday to Sunday, so unlikely you'll get Alex until next week as DTA have a stand at the show.

It can be repaired but Alex doesn't work on old E48 or P8Pro ECU,s since he took over but worth a callback they are easy to do and the same device as in all S series ECU,s
