Serial, USB, Wifi etc etc wireless ?

Just a thread to discuss comms options, partly as Rocar's thread was bumped where he seemed to have issues when using a longer USB cable for comms

You'd think in this day and age, wireless USB or serial systems would exist by now.

I was googling and did find one wireless setup for USB, although it was from 2008 and seems to be discontinued now. As to whether it would have worked given it would also be in conjunction with a USB to serial adapter...who knows

Or Serial extenders, wired that can use a simple Cat5 for the extension

Or USB extender via Cat5

https://sewelldirect.com/ul-link-ul10-b ... u=SW-30224

I wonder could those devices that transit via CAT5....then be adapted to wireless using a pair of travel routers ? These can be configured for different modes of operation.

All very cumbersome even if they did have potential, but why on earth are there no devices in this day and age to allow simple RS232 or USB wireless connectivity ?

Although googling that same company...seems they offer wireless serial comms via RF ? Which I guess should give a pretty good range ?

In my opinion, wireless communication isn't reliable enough to replace wired alternatives.

A dropped packet here or there whilst you're browsing the internet using wifi, or listening to music over bluetooth isn't going to ruin your day. A dropped packet whilst operating heavy machinery via a laptop, could be the difference between life and death.

Chances are folks have tried what you're suggesting, your research would suggest they have. But the fact it isn't available anymore would tell me it just wasn't reliable enough, certainly not to put your name too it and call it a solution.

I don't see the need for wireless communications with an ECU, yes it's handy to display some values on your smart phone, but if you're mapping the thing, or adjusting settings then you really ought to be within arms reach of the vehicle.

I've used wireless ethernet with my Syvecs now for some time...zero problems.

It isnt to say all wireless will be successful....but there really isnt any reason why it shouldnt

And for most part you arent transmitting or making critical changes all the time.

And not being tied down with a lead is very very handy, especially if you work at a few cars.

I can pull datalogs and make changes at race meets on other cars, even when I'm still sitting in my own, or in our parking area. Range isnt huge, but it's enough to make life a lot handier.

Likewise when working around the vehicle or under the bonnet....not being stuck with a stupid lead gives so much freedom when testing or diagnosing things.

But you wouldn't live map the car over wireless, right?

I havent plugged a cable into my own car or a friends now for well over a year since I started using WiFi on them. Why would I need to when wireless works ?
Syvecs are based around ethernet comms, so it does make wireless very easy though.

And plenty of people will map remotely too, mostly on a dyno, but not always. As long as there is a good internet connection you can take control of the host laptop and map entirely remotely/wireless.
I've never needed to do that myself but it is not uncommon at all.

Or another that appears to offer RS232 via WiFi ( 4 serial ports in this case )

Yeah the ethernet connection makes it easier to do, but I've set up RS232 modems before for telemetry. What a bitch.

You guys know you can connect with CAN right.

serial to wifi getting cheaper ?

I wonder if they come with a disc to create some sort of virtual com port.

Moxa do all sorts of comms to wifi or ethernet and even gsm modules. I have one here that goes from rs232 to cellphone network. Its industrial grade stuff and pretty reliable.

Its not cheap though.

Direct 4G connection would be interesting....if perhaps somewhat unreliable. But would certainly be a range extender !
