In an attempt to help make troubleshooting easier on the forum we have implemented a profile field called "ECU Model" and "Software Version". ECU Model is a drop down box for you to select what ECU you're using and the software version box is a 2-digit numeric field for the version of software your ECU is flashed with. This will help board members provide help without having to hash out what ECU and software a user is on each time a question is asked.

PLEASE fill this out! It will be a required field for new registrations but we are urging current members fill it out to help make all of our lives easier!

You should be able to update this field by going to "User Control Panel"
and editing your "Profile", or by following the following link:

ucp.php?i=172

Thanks!

Not to be difficult, but I have two different models and there's only an option for one ;)

Hm yeah I considered that. I could make it a text box where you write in but then it makes for people to write anything and honestly sometimes people don't "get it".

Do you think it's worth making a blank text box? I'll do it if you do.

Yeah I am a dealer and use different models too.

I think it would be easier just to insist that when people make technical queries, that they give some useful information to allow people to assist them.

Whether in the header line, or at least the first line of text.

I disagree, having at least one ECU model is a good idea for the majority of users seeking support. I am more likely to offer a suggestion than an ECU specific query.

A line per unit perhaps, with the vehicle and ecu model;
  • Toyota Corolla-S40 v61
  • Audi A4 - S60 v57

I think as it stands is fine, for example I just put S80 even though I deal with S40 and S60 also. No big deal, leave as-is I reckon.

People just need to give proper information in their queries. If they dont, delete it.

Whether in the title or first line of the post.

eg

S80 V62 missfire problem

And a location in their info on the sidebar ( sig or whatever it is ) compulsory before posting can occur..

It works on other forums. It's like many people asking on a forum "Where can I get my spaceship tuned"
Then they are so dim as to give no clue whatsoever as to where on planet earth they are. I do sometimes wonder if they even are on earth.

Or threads like "My car wont start, what's wrong ?"

Seriously, it's impossible to help without the person giving at least some sensible information to the viewers so they can give help.

or on the other hand, leave it as it is and never worry. The population here isnt massive, so I doubt many posts get missed anyway. Some perhaps ignored, but not many missed.
And just be grateful we have this resource thanks to Jon at all.

Completely agree. It's a bugbear of mine where I work too. I'm a 3rd line IT engineer and some of the calls logged by our helpdesk are truly atrocious. "My computer doesn't work". Yeah, thanks for that, now log it again properly.

I mean, seriously, would people walk into Currys and just say to the nearest assitant "I want a washing machine please" and then walk out, expecting the guy to know the make and model required and where the person lives?

Of course they wouldn't because money is involved. When things are free, such as forum advice, people can be incredibly lazy and ignorant and in some cases ungrateful as well to the people who've taken the time to share their knowledge.

This kind of forum laziness has been going on for years and I'm glad I'm not the only person who is mildly irritated by it!

As Stevie says, if people take the time to give us a nice amount of info upfront, we are more likely to help :D

Obviously there are some instances where people are totally and utterly clueless when asking the questions.

But for the most part there is some degree of common sense there and they are capable of asking for help properly.
