DTA S80Pro gets extremely hot!

Post by aleksanderk »

Hi!
I have a S80Pro that i used on the bench yesterday to get geadings off a water temp sensor. I noticed that the ecu got extremely hot. So hot that i could barely lay my hand on it. Is this normal?

Only thing plugged in was the water temp sensor, and power.
12v battery + to pin 31 (1 key)
Battery neg. to ecu ground pin and with pin 13+14(1 key) here as well.

Thank you for replies :)

Yes, completely normal as you're using amplified coils.

I see, but how does that affect the ecu when the coils are not connected? Are the outputs always active even if it does not see an input from a crank sensor?
Just curious to know :)

Amplified coils require an inverted signal, so the coil drivers are effectively on all time when the engine isn't running.
This requires a current sink, which generates heat, which is transferred to the case for cooling.
