Twin Spark turned on above xx TPS?

This section is dedicated to discussion of DTA engine control units such as the DTA E48 EXP, P8 Pro, DTA S40, S60, S80, and S100, as well as all things ECU related.

Twin Spark turned on above xx TPS?

Post by FrankCorrado »

Hey,

Does anyone know if DTA supports twin spark above a user determined TPS?

It does support twin spark and also the second plug can fire later than the first, but can it actually support using only one coil under say 50% TPS and above 50% it turns on the second coil?

My mech has a modified Porsche, twin-turbo and he uses that function at the moment. He would like to move to DTA but this feature seems important for him. Unless I can convince him that using a retard (in deg) for the second coil would be good as well.

UIn answe to your question... I don't know.

However, using both with split I expect to be better at low rpm / light load for a more complete burn, not sure why he would want only one firing.
I have had little a bit to do with a Ducati superbike that currently uses both firing at the same time, but will be switched to a degree split setup in the near future.
Can he give reasoning why he likes a single plug at light load?

Well I was questioning that as well yesterday, but I had no time to ask him. I mean so what if it fires 1 or 2 plugs at low rpm? I doubt 2 could be worse, right? :)

I'll surely have a talk with him in the next days.
I guess telling him it may well be better at low rpm and light load using 2 plugs would be enough to convince him.

tnx for that. :)

Frank - a local guy Bill Schimmel (who I originally bought my DTA from) runs a twin turbo 911 with (I think) a 3.3L on DTA. He uses twin spark per cyl also. There is absolutely no benefit to only running one coil until a certain point. If anything, it makes tuning harder as the flame propagation would be different throughout throttle position which could ultimately make tuning a nightmare. I would stick to twin plugs per cylinder with retard if need be.

Here is more on that car:

Well thanks a lot for that, I'll tell my mech so he can make the move next winter. :) We get snow here and a lot of cold weather, so our moded cars don't go out. It's a good time for projects. :)

Good old Bill!! lolll Kev and I know him a lot! It's good he's local for you, I'm sure Kev would have appreciated that, right Kev!! lolll Running gag between him and I. :)

That's a nice car. What's that dash unit he's using?

I am not sure Frank - I haven't hung with him for a long time. I believe its a "RacePak" unit which I think is made by MSD.

Yeah Bill's definitely running an S80 on his Porker. He doesn't do much with DTA anymore though. He was looking into chip tunes last time I spoke to him.

I wish he wouldn't keep doing his dissappearing acts as I'm waiting on parts :x
