Wasted Spark & Twin-Spark

Post by Frederik »

Hello, I´m about to do the wiring of a 4-cyl project (Alfa TS-engine) with my DTA S60PRO
Thinking of how to do with ignition-modules. I have 2 separate coil-packs (4 *2) due to twin-spark - which forces me to use wasted-spark instead of sequential firing -> fine.
I will connect the first coil-pack to port 10 (cyl 1 & 4) and port 18 (cyl 2 & 3).

Question, should I connect coilpack #2 on the same ports ?
(or use port 1 & 26)

I would use all 4 outputs and use OP1&2 for the first plugs and 3&4 for the 2nd plugs, tick twin spark. This way you can play with the spark offset. I believe on some engines they fire both plugs on one cylinder from one coil, you have the option of separating

Thanks´Rob, I was thinking if I unintended built in a spark-offset in transients between the plugs in the same cylinder since one plug fire as cyl#1 and the other plug as cyl#4 ?

You don't require the ignition amplifiers with the S60, it can drive the coils directly.
This is how the ECU was designed in the first place.

Then use all four outputs. There is no delay between outputs 1 and 3 firing, if the offset is set to zero.

Or use 4No Motorcycle twin tower coils ie one per cylinder and ign. output and you can the run sequential (if you have a cam sensor of course!)

Hi Katana, yes that´s an option since I have the cam-sensor (for the fuel).
Can you please send a link or picture to the twin-tower-coils, I have not seen these ?

For example - from Ebay - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Pack-of-2-Ig ... SwE3Bf7E3m

Prices vary from as little as this (for two coils) to OEM prices of over £100 / coil! The ones above should be rated at 3 ohm primary each coil.

Or why not use the same as Alfa do? this set up could be used sequentially, but no chance to play with spark offset.

Neat and OEM quality should work with some re-spacing if necessary.
