HELP... 50mm trigger wheel not working on bike

Post by skelly »

Hi all.
I have finally got my S40 installed on my bike (1982 GSX1000 katana)
I'm using a 50mm trigger wheel and a std suzuki 2 wire magnetic pickup.
If I crank the engine using the built in oscilloscope I get a very confusing mess of all sorts of different coloured lines, basically its not working... no matter what I do with it.
What I would like to know is...
Have any of you had any success with motorcycle crank sensors or small trigger wheels ?
Is 24 teeth better ? 24-2 maybee ?
Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers.

I did an oil cooled Suzuki some time ago and the trigger was probably the same size, but I made it a 36-1 it looked more like a stripped gear. I think you need to ensure that the sensor tip is smaller than the gaps and perhaps use the minimum number of teeth (don't recall what that is) probably 24 ?
I made my one from Iron as recommended by Allan, made it by drilling 36 holes and then on a lathe cut 1/2 the hole off if that makes sense.

12 teeth minimum, so I expect 12-1 would work.. If it's all Suzuki it should work anyway??

The standard oil cooled one only had 4 teeth and one of those was huge I recall.

Thanks for the replies.
I think my problem was that the small metal part of the sensor is wider than the thickness of the trigger wheel, also 36 teeth on a 2 inch wheel makes them quite small.
Can anyone point me in the direction of a 2 inch (ish) wheel and small (motorcycle) pickup combination that is proven and works ?
Cheers.

Make a 12-1 or get an engineering shop to do it, you will be hard pressed to fit a generic wheel inside an engine. You are probably best sticking with the stock Suzuki sensor. I assume its something like the oil cooled engine. This is what I made, I did use it in the lathe to simulate an engine its now an 18-1 and a bit of a mess as I just filed 1/2 the teeth off but its yours for £5 posted to UK.

Hi Rob.
If 18-1 will work ok with an S40 ecu & the boss measures 24mm then I'll have that please.
It could be a better starting point than what I already have.
Cheers.

Trigger wheels UK do a 50mm 36-1 wheel off the shelf and plenty of bikes have used them with ecu's from Megasquirt to Motec and have been factory tested to over 13,000 rpm with inductive sensor. On a Katana you have the advantage of a dry pick-up and so easy to time with a strobe - try that with a GSXR - what a mess!

Thats exactly what I used.
A 50mm dia 36-1 trigger wheel from trigger wheels which was 5mm thick and a magnetic pickup from a GSXR600 SRAD.
It didnt work at all well.. see trace above..
Thats why I am going to try something else.
Hopefully you can see the photo of my setup.
Cheers.
