Problem solved - turned out to be a dodgy power supply to the ECU which was caused by loose crimp connectors on the inline 20A fuse. Fortunately I happened to touch it while doing some wiring checks and it was hot. Tightened the connectors, fitted a new fuse and everything works. Simples!
