Honda blackbird first start

Post by SimonR »

Hopefully somebody can help. I'm struggling to understand this ecu stuff it's all very new to me.
I've wired it all up on my honda blackbird turbo, I've set the crank wheel to the honda blackbird setting, done the tests and all sensors are fine, spark plugs fire injectors opening etc.
Then I've gone to the diagnosics part, disconnected the fuel pump and tried to start it, it synchronised and said trying to start.
But when I reconnected the fuel pump and tried again it backfired once so I've left it alone!
All I want is to be 100% sure it's all fine before I take it to the rollers, if it would run somewhere near ok I'd be happy.
I'm unsure of crank angle, cam angle settings and it's wired for wasted spark using coil output 1 and 2 but I can't remove the firing angles for coil 3 and 4.
Can anyone help?

Are you using a base map for your actual engine ?

If it's wasted spark, firing angles for 3/4 wont matter as you arent using those outputs.

Are you using an OEM coil setup fro that actual engine, or something different ?

Are you getting a valid crank or cam signal ?

I can't find a base map for my engine anywhere.
Yes it's all original blackbird coils etc
I have an oscilloscope picture I'll try post when I get home, it means nothing to me!
Do you think I'm wasting my time?

There is a cam tooth/angle figure that comes up when cranking, in the diagnostics part.

As it's synchronised, you've got the correct settings for the crank and cam.
The sensor angle you should measure as per the instructions in the manual on page 111.

Can you do the crankshaft oscilloscope again, but then use the Save Pic button at the bottom of the screen? It's much clearer then.

Does the Blackbird have 4 pencil coils, or a single coil pack?

There is 2 coils, 1 doing cyl 1 and 4 the other 2 and 3.

I put a timing light on it last night and doesn't fire when cranking, but just as I stop it fires once.

The voltage at the coils drops to around 9-9.5v when cranking

I'll try a different battery tonight

Here's a startup map for you. Please note, this is used on a car with a very small inlet, so do not run your engine on this for long, as it will be massively lean.

I've just loaded that map on and it sounds promising it is trying to do something.

On the coil per plug settings though, one coil per plug is marked as yes, so I changed this to no and it just backfires then.

What do I need to change for my 2 coil setup?

Thank you for the map.

You say it's two coils, how many wires go to each pack ?
