Locked MAPS

Post by mark220475 »

Hello All

This might sound a silly question, but if my turner locks the fuel map;

1) Can I veiw it?

2) Can I get it unlocked and if so how?

Regards

Mark

You can't view the maps, only the diagnostics.

You can't. Speak to your mapper to get any changes made.

2...yes, ask whoever locked it, to unlock it !

or guess...it's only a 4 digit code.....so really 9999 possibilities ? lol Not sure if there is a lockout on multiple attempts ?

Its a crappy thing to do by the tuner! It's not secret / 'hold the papers' type information and could be deemed illegal if the owner chooses to use another tuner - the first has restricted the free access and created a monopoly for use, on equipment he doesn't own!

You can sort of see the reasons why it may be needed; say you purchased an engine package that included the ecu the supplier might want to protect the way that they make the engine run or restrict it's rpm. But the supplier would never know what ecu was run on that engine anyway.

If a rolling road operator did it just because he could to a car in for a mapping session I'd go ballistic.

Simple question - was the customer ie. the OP made aware from the off that the ECU would be locked ? If yes then its cap in hand time and pay whatever to unlock it. If no, then its Breach of Contract in that the restriction on use was not made clear at time of order or payment and was subsequently found!
As said before the maps are just simple numbers - if a new 'secret' TC method was implemented then the programmer does have intellectual property rights over that - but only that! Unlike OEM systems - we don't expect to play with the programming unlike aftermarket were its very purpose for existence is to be fiddled with!
