Case earth & problems if you don't!!!

Post by Neilw »

You might have noticed that S-series ECU's (except early ones and plastic-cased S40's) have a 5mm earth stud on the case. DTA's wiring diagrams show that this should be connected to pin 13 (power ground).

Make sure that you do it, and that it's as short a wire as possible!

If not, you can have no end of problems with noise on sensor inputs. Most installations I've come across don't have the earth connection and it's been causing problems when we 'share' the gear position input with our paddleshift controller. I've also seen numerous crank sensor errors and re-syncs when the case has been left floating.

It doesnt cause problems on all setups. Just some. Who knows why.

I think mine was one of the first to give problems when the S Series was introduced, but there was no provision for case earthing then. So it had to be DIY'd

Only problems were crank trigger related, but severe enough to cause bad running, but also with no real pattern or regularity.

But yes, earth the case unless there is a very good reason not to ( and I cant think of any )
