5v Out

Post by Tim »

Hi,

I'm working on a little project using a Teensy 3.2 dev board that can be powered from a 3.3 to 6v source. I wondered if it would be possible to use an S40's 5V Out to power this?

This would save me having to handle the +12v from an alternator.

Many Thanks

Tim

Yes would be fine I think but you should have some idea of how much current you need. Any thing over 0.5 amp would be wrong to my mind.

I'd be cautious about using that dedicated and important sensor supply for anything other than sensors.

There are a load of cheap 12v to USB adaptors about these days that will give you a simple 5v output.

eg

Undoubtedly there are other options too, but that type of thing is extremely handy.

Don't use the ECU 5v for that, it's only rated for sensor power. A few hundred milliamps, no more.
You'd be better off with a cheap USB converter, as per Stevie.

Thanks for the responses.

So technically it's possible, but not advisable. I guess if for whatever reason the Teensy draws huge current it could kill the sensor circuit. Not good.

I'll drop the idea of using the 5v and handle 12. Thanks for the links!

I use an old Blackberry phone charger, perfect for providing a good stable 5V supply up to 1 amp I think. You could probably also use any similar phone charger, Apple iphone or Samsung galaxy etc.
