Re: Motec Universal Crimper
Too large, they don't crimp a tight enough circumference to fit through the backshell that holds the seal.

Re: Motec Universal Crimper
What a complete pain in the arse this is turning out to be. Maybe I should just ask Allan at DTA to crimp a load of wire onto the pins, pay him, then I don't have to faff about trying to find a crimper that will do the job properly
Re: Motec Universal Crimper
Can be had a little cheaper than that from the UK, so saves on shipping / import etc.stevieturbo wrote:or definitely the right tool. Their price isnt too bad either compared to some

The Knipex 97 43 200 pliers I've seen for £89.99 at Conrad Electronics and the Knipex 97 49 44 rolled contact die is £105 at RS - http://uk.rs-online.com/web/p/connector-rf/3368113/

Yea, the reference is just so people can get the part numbers from it really.
Still a bit expensive for one or two looms though.
You'd be half way to buying a loom or as suggested above, get a pro to crimp you up some wires.

Re: Motec Universal Crimper
I ended up buying a load of PressMaster crimps in an attempt to find that elusive perfect crimp! None of the dies I bought were perfect, but one was close enough. But the quality is very good and the incorrect dies are useful for other wiring jobs around the car and home, so not a bad investment.
£200 for 1 specfic crimp is a lot though. If a few ECU makers use the same connector, it surprises me none of them have commissioned a simple plier with the correct impression for these pins for like, 50 quid or something.

Re: Motec Universal Crimper
Having spoken to Allan, he sells 2m wire with the pins attached for £1.50 + vat, so am getting several 2m lengths, as this will be far far easier for my needs
Re: Motec Universal Crimper
That's a good idea and reasonably priced....

Re Knipex.
Ive seen these for sale on egay. Clearly a copy of the Knipex crimper
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VESPA-CRIMPIN ... 500wt_1076
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/RATCHET-CRIMP ... 500wt_1076
Perhaps an option with suitable Knipex jaws ?
Proper Knipex crimper ( no idea what jaws though )

Interesting Stevie -
The tool I picked up does very similar crimps. What I found is that you need to run the smaller crimps to get the wings that bite into the insulation to come together small enough to fit in the shell opening on the Amp plug. Those look quite wide though you can probably tweak it some.

Re: Motec Universal Crimper
Ive ordered the one above. Although purely for the normal winged crimps in the picture.
But if the actual crimper is a copy of the Knipex tool, all you would need is the correct jaws/dies for the Tyco pins and it has reduced some of the cost, as the Knipex tool is over £100 anyway
