Just to update - the laser tool i linked to before is indeed crap for the conductor crimp but it does pretty decent job of the insulator crimp...and it's only about a tenner off ebay :)

I bought this set http://www.esska-tech.co.uk/esska_eng_s ... _jaws.html

Works fine, but the wings on the terminals needs to be slightly "pre-bent" for good result.
I adjust the wings with a needle nose plier first, just so the die in the jaws run better on the terminal wings.
Also the sharp wings that hold onto the insulation may need some extra work afterwards to fit into the contact housing, but nothing difficult.
The cable crimping is very good, i set the crimping force on "mid" level and cannot get the cable to loosen from the terminal.
I will try to take some pics of my crimpings later.

Good thing with this set is that it can crimp most common terminals and some odd ones too.

Edit: picture of one terminal crimped with the tool above. Wire is 0,75 mm2.

It's loom time for my engine project and as i've got some Amazon vouchers burning a hole in my pocket from xmas, what do you guys think of...

and

EDIT: looking on their site, just found this: http://www.engineer.jp/en/products/par20e.html

...which appears to do both. Have mailed them the terminal spec to see what they say.

...and the answer is...

"In reply to your query about TYCO contacts, unfortunately none of our Crimping Tools are suitable. That is because the length of wire barrel (3mm) is longer than our dies (T: 2.5mm max) and the shape of insulation barrels is not in parallel."

Ok, I'm going to give this one a go:

http://cpc.farnell.com/jsp/search/produ ... ku=TL01733

there's also another tool not mentioned in this thread that was talked about on the old forum, the MAC TCT1028 which is around £41 from MAC. Supposedly does the conductor crimp well.

I've also spoken with CE Tools about their T-10, T-16 and T-18. The T-16 is actually a copy of the delphi tool Jon linked to in the first post. They advise the T-10 might be suitable and is $37.

There's also this:

http://www.bandc.biz/openbarrelcrimptool.aspx

Which Bob from Aeroelectric says "will work".

Finally, I've fired off a mail to these guys:

http://www.hozan.co.jp/E/catalog/Crimpers/P706.html

http://www.hozan.co.jp/E/catalog/Crimpers/P707.html

I've yet to see anything that looks like it could do both for a reasonable amount of money!

Looks too large.

I think you guys are missing the point to a degree... the right tools are out there they just aren't overly cheap - mind you, they're not overly expensive either. I got mine from MSEL, send him a message on here if you want one - I use mine all the time, works well. Just don't expect a reply to a "where do you get them" query. Just buy one from him ;)

For those wondering, the tool I have is slightly modified adding a washer to space the guide out a touch further to suit the terminal, as it's actually meant for something else - however, correct tools are now available I believe? I haven't looked into it further as I already have one that works perfectly. Send MSEL a message if you are genuinely interested in buying a correct tool. If enough are keen maybe he'll do a bulk/group deal, who knows.

the problem with the sureseal 1.0 crimps is there not oval like most cheep tools, the base of the open barrel needs to be rounded to give a proper crimp.

i use a modified pressmaster tool, its fairly cheep i think it was £45 for the frame and around £50 for the die set (witch i then machined) Tbh it was fairly good to start with, but dident want any problems later on!

The point for me (and I'm sure many others) is that I'm only ever going to build one or two looms. I don't want one built for me, I want to build it myself and £2-300 for a 'proper' crimping tool is extortionate. There are tools out there for £10 that crimp terminals very well - just not these ones. It makes absolutely no sense, it's just a pair of metal jaws machined to a shape, why should one shape have to cost 20x more!? Christ, the 'official' tool is like £1250, madness!!
