Hello,
I'm having a problem to have crank sensor signal.

So I'm converting a vw flat4 engine to efi
use a s80 ecu and a dubshop crank sensor kit, this one:

I can get the ecu to read the signal provided from the sensor.

Have tested the sensor with a 12v and 5v signal from a external source and the measurments on the volt meter goes from 12v to 0.25v and 5v to 0.25v.
So this tells me that the sensor is working and the distance between the sensor and wheel is good, correct?

If I meassure between the sensor when connected to ecu and cranking the signal stays on 4.8v.
On the oscilloscope I have no signal at al.

What could be wrong?
I assume the ecu knows from itself if it's connected to a hall or mag sensor( this doesn't need to be selected)?

Any help would be much appriciated!

Check that the signal pin is in the correct hole in the connector to suit your hall effect sensor(pin 13) magnetic sensor (pin12).

hi,
checked that before. Have measurrd al the wires with multimeter to be sure wiring is ok.

Should it be possible that the signal measuured by the multimeter is 'stronger' than the one from the ecu? And the sensor need to be closer? The manual of the sensor say 3 mm or less gap, it's on 2/2.1mm now.

The gap on those sensors is normally 1 - 2mm.
Try moving it closer, starting with around 1.5mm.

With scope or other...if you pass a screwdriver or other ferrous metal object over the sensor, you should see it switch hi-lo ( ie any pass would be a tooth )

hello,
thanks for the reply's

so moved the sensor to 1.5mm and no change, went even closer nothing changed.

if i do the test with the external source at 1.5mm it works (5v to 0.6v)
if i measure at the signal wire when sensor is connected to ecu it stays on 4.6v.

any ideas what i could try?

You've fitted a alloy toothed wheel in error?

Is it an NPN normally open sensor?

No, it's magnetic.
If i take it lose and slide it by hand over the sensor i feel it being 'pulled' to it.

Have to say the magnetic force is stronger when i use the extrenal source then the 5v source from ecu, but that's probably normal.



I have one of these kit also

maybe I should try it and see if i can make connection with that one.
I have the other wire for it.

@Alex,
when its standing for a tooth the voltage drops and when it's between tooth it's 5v.
Don't now if that's a open or closed one.
