This is the reason why i have bought laptops with 9 pin RS232-ports. Never had any communication errors with DTA, and i built my own 15 pin to 9 pin cables and knobs-box.

Its getting a bit hard to find laptops with 9 pin ports, the one i have now is a Fujitsu Lifebook E554 with SSD-harddrive.

There are always second hand laptops available though, and can be handy to dedicated one for car stuff.


Although when I used DTA, I had good luck with PCMCIA adapters, and the Keyspan USA-19HSUSB to serial.

Strangely though the one I used the longest was the cheapest ! No idea what brand it was, just it was green and said HL-340 on it, looked like this, and it was dirt cheap.

Whether it will work for every other laptop etc I dont know, but it worked for me.
