E48, no injectors firing when cranking.
Hi, Just built an air cooled bug with an E48. I have lots of questions, but my first problem is; the injectors fire using the test software, but not when cranking. Any ideas?
Thanks. Steve.
Thanks. Steve.

You've got crankshaft wheel or sensor problems then. The test only tests the wiring of the devices under test.

Okay. But I do have spark, and it registers RPM when cranking. I will try to check that, thank you.
Oh, it also shows xx ms injector time on the monitor.

new build ? old build ? ever run before ? other ?
Do your injectors have a 12v supply during cranking ?

New build, my first. No voltage when cranking. Engine runs if you put fuel in it.

I misspoke, I checked across the 2 terminals to the inj's. I'm sure it has voltage, that is straight from the fuse block.
If you want the whole story, I made the whole system out of stuff I had laying around. That's kinda my specialty. I am an air cooled VW guy from way back, retired now. I am a points and carburator guy, but I have some experience with injection. I put a Golf gas engine into a diesel Vanagon, and Put a GSXR 1000 engine into my A-Mod car. This engine has a Hyundai Elantra throttle body, a Ford Escort crank sensor, Triumph motorcycle air temp sensor, Vanagon water sensor plumbed into the oil system. Injectors are from a Camaro, and I made my own fuel rails.
I bought the DTA system about a decade ago because I met Alex?, the main DTA guy at the Racer show in Indianapolis.

"I'm sure"...maybe not so sure ?
And to test for 12v power to the injector, you need to test between the 12v pin at the injector and the negative battery terminal. Do this during cranking to prove you have power.
It probably was around ten years ago Alex took over DTA from Allan when Allan retired and was literally going to just close the business. Fortunately he was talked out of doing that to allow DTA to continue and grow.
Then during cranking you could test between 12v battery and the ecu trigger pin using a noid light or suitable led, or meter with a pulse width type function ( or oscilloscope ) to see if there is indeed a signal from the ecu during cranking.
At this stage I would not be testing exclusively with only the 2 pins at an injector.

Every test I can think of confirms it. There is no physical/electrical problem. The injectors work in test mode. The status from the ecu shows no errors, it shows the injectors firing. Either there is some setting I can't see, or some problem with the ecu.

I think Stevie's thoughts are that there are often some 12V circuits that are disabled during cranking, but active with the engine either stopped or running. You must make sure not to use one of those 12V supplies for injector power (or a fuel pump). This can be a tricky one to catch.

See if there are any big negative fuel compensations. You can use Real Time Mapping for that.Onebadbugman wrote: ↑Wed Mar 22, 2023 6:39 pm Every test I can think of confirms it.
