S80 ecu advice needed :(

Post by adzer »

ok so i bought a s60 ecu for my big turbo build, i converted my 2004 1.8t to 4wd and am now building up the engine, bought a s80 ecu for my build only to realise it doesnt support drive by wire throttle, im led to believe there is a stc box? that dta do that can make me run dbw but info on this is non existant!!!

does anyone know anything about this?

im begining to wonder if this ecu's even worth the hassle/money now, if i cant find out any info about it im gonna need to try return the ecu as i dont have time to chase ppl around trying to find info on their products.

i've been told by bill at badger 5 (vag specialist) that he can supply this stc box for £495 + vat and £23 + vat for the wiring block.

by time i've bought that thats almost the same price as the ecu in the first place!!!

any help is greatful :|

I'm guessing you havent tried contacting DTA ? There was one or two people here using DBW via DTA, although not sure how mainstream this product ever became or how well it operates.

Very few ecu's, at any price can control a DBW without extra boxes. I can think of only 2 off the top of my head. One is about 2x the price of DTA, the other about 3-4x the price of a DTA. There are no budget ecu's that will do it.
Most systems rely on an external box to drive the DBW unit.

Of course the other cheap option it so simply bolt on a mechanical throttle. It's hassle free, costs virtually nothing and always works.

I have emailed someone at Dta, email address was provided to me from the supplier I got the ecu from buy no reply as of yet from Dta.

And I would of converted to throttle cable but I have a larger tb to be fitted along with my updated intake manifold

From a simplicity point of view, the easiest thing will be to go mechanical. What bolt pattern/size of TB do you need ?

75mm or 80mm tb bolt pattern I'm unsure of as I got it along with my new inlet mani, and came with an adapter plate to fit between the 2 items

That's a seriously huge throttle body for such a small engine. What sort of power are you aiming for ?
A TB that size would be for pushing the top end of 3 figures.

I'd just take a look around a breakers yard and find something that is suitable.

Or no idea on planet earth you are located, but this UK company makes some universal TB's at not unreasonable prices.

I wouldn't go 75-80mm on a 1.8t, I am running a 2.9L 24v BMW turbo motor at 700 rwhp with a ~75mm

Even a 60mm TB will happily support in excess of 5-600hp with no problems.

Going big just gives you no throttle resolution whatsoever, when a 50% opening might supply the engine with all the air it needs.

Plus, there really is no point fitting a TB much larger than your actual boost plumbing. Otherwise at WOT the actual pipework will cause more of a restriction than the actual throttle opening !

I make some inline throttle bodies in 52mm and 58mm they attach at both sides to hose either 2 1/4inch or 2.5 inch and I also have some imported versions exactly the same as those IK ones mentioned above in 65 70 and 80mm
