Nearly ready to install bodies on my 205, loom is built up, got a base map, DTASWIN installed on desktop PC (haven't got hold of a laptop yet)

USB to serial adapter purchased, up to date Drivers installed from Prolific website.

ECU powered up with a battery reading 12.6v, fuel pump relay primes fine.

I get this error:

I have checked which comms port the USB is connected to, DTASWIN is pointing to the correct port.

I am connecting through a POT box I have made myself which saves buying or making a specific lead, would be so much simpler if they used an USB connection...

I have confirmed pinouts to be correct through the box

hang on is that a monitor lead? you might have problems with that, sometimes they gang a load of pins to the screen for a ground connection!

bother!

I have no idea what it is specifically but its quite likely, I know the 5 main pins buzz through correctly, I'll check the rest.

I think you nailed it, just tried to buzz a few pins through, damn tricky as they're so small and I only have two hands! but as you suggested, the main earth on pin 5 pulls several others to earth as well which are the knobs, though none of these are connected to the 9 pin at all, I guess it would be confusing the hell out of the ecu.

yea the outher day i made a lead like this for a tricky install, you only need pins 1 - 12 so moniter cable will do it, but i put new plugs on to get rid of the linked up pins.

If buying cables to butcher, always best buying extension cables. That way they are usually just straight through, pin to pin

Right, got 2 plugs from maplin and made a straight through 9 to 15 and still no luck.

USB set to com1, FIFO buffers set to min (Suggested by Sandy Brown), also tried with them off.

with ecu off, get the usual ecu off/not connected error,

power ecu up it primes FP relay, but I get comms port already in use error.
