Honeywell Hall sensor as a crank sensor

Post by ESRA Carperformance »

Hi,

Can i use a Hall sensor instead of a vr one as a pickup?

http://nl.rs-online.com/web/p/magnetic-pickups/2355706/

I like this one.

If so...

+ = 5 volt
0 = signal to ecu
- = grd

do i get that right?

Cheers

yeah i've used one as a crank pickup before.

wiring looks ok.

It depends on the trigger wheel, tooth size, spacing and rpm's used.

And as your info suggests you have a P8 Pro....

Not even sure it can use a hall sensor for crank trigger ?

VR/2 wire really is easier and more reliable anyway

Yes sorry. Its a p8pro

Wheel is a 150mm 60-2
Max rpm is 7000.

And i don't know if the ecu can use a block type input instead of a wave.
Thats the question really

i think you need to change a jumper inside the ecu to run a hall sensor.

Oke.. I will try to find a vr sensor that will fit my trigger wheel setup.

The Ford Sensor DTA recommend is pretty cheap and not very big.

On a wheel with that many teeth and such a relatively small diameter wheel, not convinced a GT101 would be reliable enough at high rpm's

I don't think a hall sensor is best suited to crank duty, the signal is more likely to get lost at high rpm, a vr sensor the signal gets stronger with rpm.
P8 can do hall sensor, there is a little jumper inside that needs, well, jumping.

If that was 36-1, the GT101 might work fine. But IMO too many teeth for it to be safe.

It wouldnt be difficult to make a small adaptor to use the Ford sensor with that wheel and bracket.

If you read the manual, it lists these crank sensors as commonly used

Crank Sensor (almost any VR (Magnetic) type)
Ford 6859702
6181945

Vx/Opel 904 514 41

Bosch 0261 210 036
0261 210 104
0261 210 001
0261 210 081 (VW)

Rover NSC100390

IMO if you insist on using a hall sensor for whatever reason, best to choose a sensor that is already used as a crank sensor and on a wheel similar to yours. That way it will be designed to read a tooth profile like you are using reliably.
